The Life Story of Doma, the Second Upper Moon Demon Who Leads People to Heaven

Demon Slayer is one of the popular animanga worldwide. The story follows the journey of Tanjiro Kamado, a young boy striving to save his sister, Nezuko, who turned into a demon after their family was slaughtered by the main demon, Kibutsuji Muzan. Throughout his journey, Tanjiro encounters various friends and enemies, including demons who serve under Muzan as members of the Twelve Kizuki, or the Twelve Moon Demons.

One of the most intriguing Upper Moon demons to learn about is Doma, who holds the rank of the second Upper Moon. He briefly appears in the final episodes of the second season of the anime. Doma is a powerful demon with the ability to control ice and snow. He also leads a sect known as the Eternal Paradise Sect and is responsible for the deaths of Inosuke Hashibira's mother, Kotoha, and Kanae Kocho, the elder sister of Shinobu Kocho and the adoptive sister of Kanao Tsuyuri. As a result, he becomes a sworn enemy of Shinobu, Kanao, and Inosuke.

However, beneath it all, Doma has a fascinating story. Unlike other bloodthirsty and cruel demons, he sees himself as a hero who guides people to heaven by killing them. He lacks the understanding and ability to feel human emotions, often acting without guilt or remorse.

Background of Doma

More than a hundred years ago, Doma was born as a child with extraordinary uniqueness. His eyes were rainbow-colored, and his hair was pale. People considered him special and believed he could communicate with the gods. His parents, who were considered foolish, established him as the head of a sect they formed, later known as the Eternal Paradise Sect.

Despite mocking his parents' low intelligence, he played along and accepted his role. Nevertheless, he never once heard the voices of the gods. Seated in a elaborately decorated room as the sect's leader, Doma met many people seeking advice and assistance for the suffering they experienced in their lives.

He found these stories incredibly dull and couldn't fathom why they turned to a child for help. They asked him to lead them to heaven, causing Doma to cry because he never believed or knew that heaven, gods, and Buddhas were real. To him, they were nothing more than fantasies concocted by humans. He lamented that people believed in something so fictional.

Doma also completely lacked the ability to understand and experience human emotions. When he was a child, his mother suffered from mental illness and stabbed his father to death due to his many affairs with numerous female sect followers. She then took her own life by poisoning herself to death.

However, despite these horrifying events happening right in front of him, Doma was merely disturbed by the bloody chaos that ensued in the room and repulsed by the pungent scent of blood. He simply wanted to clear the air in the room before the foul odor permanently adhered to the furniture.

Encounter with Muzan

At the age of 20, he met Kibutsuji Muzan, who turned him into a demon. Doma would continue leading the sect, only with a new mission. He became convinced that it was truly his mission to guide people to heaven, and he did so by killing his followers. For him, heaven and the cessation of pain could be found by killing them, and their deaths at his hands meant they would no longer suffer from pain.

Doma pursued this ambition throughout his life. He also joined the Twelve Kizuki as the sixth Upper Moon, later rising to the rank of the second Upper Moon after killing several other Lower Moons. He became one of the most loyal and obedient demons to Muzan, never showing fear or hesitation towards him.

Encounter with Sibling Demons Gyutaro and Daki

At one point, Doma held the rank of the sixth among the Twelve Kizuki. During this time, while roaming around the entertainment district and indulging in the flesh of geisha and young girls, he encountered his sibling demons, Gyutaro and Daki, both on the brink of death.

Gyutaro had been stabbed from behind and slowly bled to death. His sister, Daki, had been burnt beyond recognition. Out of "kindness," Doma offered to turn both siblings into demons and save them.

Doma proceeded to teach them how to survive as demons, including ways to consume humans discreetly and evade demon hunters. He also bestowed upon them the rank of the sixth among the Twelve Kizuki and tasked them with guarding the entertainment district.

Nevertheless, Doma cared little for their fate. He regarded them as disposable playthings he could discard at any moment. He also remained unaware of the close bond between Gyutaro and Daki as siblings and the love they shared for one another.

Encounter with Shinobu Kocho

One of Doma's earliest victims was Kanae Kocho, the elder sister of Shinobu Kocho and the adoptive sister of Kanao Tsuyuri. Kanae was a demon slayer with a kind heart who always smiled. She also led the Insect Pillar Demon Slayer Corps.

Kanae crossed paths with Doma while investigating the Eternal Paradise Sect alongside her brother, Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Pillar leader of the Demon Slayer Corps. They discovered that the sect was a den of demons led by Doma.

Kanae attempted to confront Doma alone, but she was defenseless against his ice and snow powers. Doma easily killed her without mercy or empathy. He even tried to consume her heart, but found it distasteful due to its bitter taste.

Shinobu, still young and not yet a demon slayer, witnessed her sister's death from a distance. She felt profound sorrow and anger towards Doma. She vowed to avenge her sister's death, even though she realized she lacked the physical strength to combat demons.

Shinobu later became a demon slayer specializing in using poison to kill demons. She also utilized wisteria flower poison, the deadliest poison to demons. Over the years, she accumulated this poison within her body, preparing herself for a battle against Doma.

Bloody Battle against Shinobu

The battle between Doma and Shinobu was one of the most dramatic moments in the Demon Slayer story. Despite lacking physical strength comparable to Doma's, Shinobu possessed brilliant strategies and lethal poison. She managed to inject her poison needles into Doma's body, causing immense pain.

However, Doma didn't experience pain as humans do. He continued his attacks calmly, evading Shinobu's assaults. Despite the wisteria flower poison beginning to take effect, Doma remained unaffected and fought on in his unique style.

Ultimately, Shinobu used her own body as a weapon. She gripped Doma with her legs and thrust her wisteria-poisoned sword into him. With her final strength, she defeated Doma. Yet, in his last moments, Doma attempted to consume Shinobu in retaliation. However, the poison within Shinobu's body affected Doma, ensnaring him in a cycle of vengeance and poison.

Profound Conclusion

Before taking his last breath, Doma professed his love for Shinobu. He admitted that his feelings had allowed him to experience emotions he had never understood before. However, Shinobu firmly rejected him, uninterested in his final words.

Doma finally breathed his last with an expression of surprise and victory frozen on his face. He departed with a sense of satisfaction and a smile on his lips, even though his fate was sealed by the poison he inhaled from Shinobu's body.

Conclusion

Doma is a complex character with a background and life journey filled with irony and tragedy. Though initially introduced as an odd and empathy-lacking figure, his encounter with Shinobu and their dramatic battle reveal a profound emotional transformation. Through his life story, Doma adds layers to the Demon Slayer narrative, showcasing that even antagonist characters possess rich stories filled with nuances and internal conflicts.
