Muzan Kibutsuji: Profile, Weaknesses, and Abilities - The Malevolent Mastermind in Demon Slayer

Muzan Kibutsuji is the main antagonist in the series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the Demon King, the first and origin of all demons. Muzan also leads the Twelve Kizuki, an organization composed of the twelve strongest demons under his command.

A thousand years ago, during the Heian period, Muzan turned into a demon after undergoing experimental treatment to cure his terminal illness. Since then, his goal has been to live without the fear of death and achieve true immortality. He plans to do this in two ways: by searching for the Blue Spider Lily or by creating more demons, hoping that one of them will eventually overcome their weakness to sunlight.

As the Demon King, Muzan can control anyone who has absorbed his blood and turned into a demon, except for Nezuko Kamado, Tamayo, Yushiro, and Chachamaru. It is later revealed that Muzan shares the same bloodline as the Ubuyashiki Family.

Appearance

Muzan's appearance is that of a tall, slender, and muscular man with extremely pale skin, making him appear sickly and frail. He has curly black hair and sharp almond-shaped eyes with grape-red irises resembling cat-like eyes. He also has sharp blue nails on his hands, and he looks to be in his twenties.

In his initial appearance, Muzan wears a white fedora hat with a red ribbon and slightly luxurious clothing. His outfit consists of a black embroidered suit and a white tie over a black shirt and white trousers. He also wears black loafers. As seen in Rui's flashback when meeting Muzan, the Demon King had a slightly different hairstyle and attire in the past than when he first appeared. When meeting Rui, Muzan had straighter hair parted down the middle and wore a loose-fitting jacket with a half-white mantle over it.

During his encounter with the Lower Rank demons, he appeared disguised as a graceful woman in a long black yukata, initially unrecognizable to the Lower Ranks. He later transformed into his latest alias - a sickly-looking boy adopted by an elderly couple - with a child's body, pale white skin, and neat black hair. His main attire in this disguise was a plain white shirt and black cargo shorts with knee-high socks and loafers.

Appearance in the Final Battle

After neutralizing Tamayo's poison and emerging from his flesh cocoon, Muzan's hair grew long and turned white due to Shinobu's poison accelerating his aging. He also grew numerous mouths all over his body, each lined with sharp teeth. His skin appeared to have dark red masses growing from the tips of his limbs, branching into his body. It was later revealed that Muzan had many scars all over his body from wounds sustained during his first battle against Yoriichi, which burned him at the cellular level and never fully healed despite hundreds of years. These scars were not visible to the naked eye and only became visible when he weakened.

During his final struggle, and as a way to slow down the effects of sunlight, Muzan took on the form of a giant baby that grew to be about three stories tall when standing. In this form, he had prominently visible blood vessels all over his body, small claws on his hands, and fangs in his mouth.

Personality

Muzan is a cold-hearted, cruel, intimidating, and highly intelligent individual. He sees no value in any humans he encounters and shows little regard for his own subordinates. He rarely displays annoyance or pleasure, appearing entirely monotone and indifferent on most occasions, even when ruthlessly killing his own subordinates. The only times he has shown emotion are when his vision of perfection is progressing or when he has a subordinate who completely submits to his will. The manga depicts him as more expressive, especially when angry, with exaggerated facial features to convey emotions that are usually not readable (perhaps as a way to display his otherwise inscrutable emotions). In the anime, his expression is slightly altered, and his voice tone remains consistent almost all the time, emphasizing his monotonous demeanor. His cruel and imposing nature has earned him great respect and fear from many demons.

His ego and delusional self-importance are so immense that he cannot tolerate being insulted or corrected in any way, believing that others exist only to serve him. This also means he rarely takes any opponent or threat seriously. He brutally killed a drunken man just for being rude to him, and he killed a man's brother and his friend when they did nothing, proclaiming his own perfection and superiority, showcasing his childishness as he refused to accept mockery and would do anything to have the insult rectified. This event also hints that Muzan has bitter memories of his weak human past and is highly self-aware of his abnormal, sickly appearance, immediately followed by a lengthy denial that he is unhealthy, sick, and especially on the brink of death, most likely as a bitter reminder that he is still not perfect. When confronted by Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the man responded to Muzan with pity and sadness for the life he had lived. However, Muzan only interpreted it as an insult and a threat, further reinforcing his hatred for humanity and the Demon Slayers. He also believed that Heaven had allowed him to escape the murder of thousands of people because he had never seen God or Buddha.

Muzan's most prominent characteristic is his extreme narcissism, childishness, and obsession with becoming a perfect being. Because he has lived for over 1000 years and observed and had almost no real challenges, his extreme egocentrism is almost understandable. He considers almost nothing to be of concern to him other than overcoming his inability to walk in sunlight.

Abilities

Muzan possesses extraordinary abilities as the Demon King, surpassing all other demons. He has immeasurable speed, strength, durability, and regeneration, as well as a demonic blood art that allows him to freely manipulate his body and create deadly techniques. He is also highly intelligent and cunning, capable of disguising himself as a human and manipulating other demons to serve him. He has five brains and seven hearts, making it difficult to kill him even with Nichirin swords or sunlight.

Muzan's fighting style relies on sharp and flexible flesh whips that he forms from his body parts. He can grow whips on his arms, back, and thighs and can freely change their shapes and movements as he wishes. He can also grow mouths on his whips and create powerful suction effects from them to drag his targets toward him to be cut into pieces. Additionally, he can transform his face into a giant mouth to release shockwave-like energy blasts that damage the nervous system of his target. Muzan can also split himself into thousands of pieces to escape and then reassemble his body parts to regenerate fully.

Muzan is a tough and experienced fighter who has battled the Demon Slayers for a thousand years. He even faced Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer ever, and managed to survive despite being severely injured. He can also defeat five Hashira with ease and was only defeated after the entire Demon Slayer Corps united against him. However, despite his immense strength, Muzan also has a cowardly and fear of death, which makes him always avoid conflict when possible and use other demons as his pawns.

Weaknesses

He also considers humans to be weak and worthless creatures and feels humiliated when reminded of his past as a human. He is highly self-conscious about his pale and sickly appearance and dislikes it when anyone comments on or mocks him. He also has bitter memories of Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the legendary Demon Slayer who nearly killed him with a bright red Nichirin sword. Muzan despises Yoriichi and fears his abilities to the point that he attempted to erase all traces of him from history.

Furthermore, Muzan has several technical or situational weaknesses. For example, he cannot move freely during the daytime because of sunlight, so he must rely on his subordinates or disguise himself as a human to protect himself. He also cannot detect the presence of Nezuko Kamado, who has demon blood but is unaffected by his will. He also cannot control Tamayo and Yushiro, who have freed themselves from his curse by using a medicine created by Tamayo. Additionally, he is vulnerable to poisons developed by Tamayo and Shinobu Kocho, which can weaken his body and revert him to a human. This poison can also accelerate the aging process of his body, making him more susceptible to attacks from the Demon Slayers.
