Jujutsu is a science that allows someone to use the cursed energy within them to perform various sorcery techniques. Jujutsu is also the name of an organization tasked with protecting the world from the threats of cursed creatures that can harm humans. Members of this organization are called jujutsu experts or shamans.

Jujutsu experts have levels that indicate how strong and experienced they are in facing cursed creatures. These levels are divided into seven, ranging from Level 4 as the lowest to Special Grade as the highest. So, how does a jujutsu expert advance to the next level? Here's the explanation.

Advancing Jujutsu Levels

To advance to the next level, a jujutsu expert must receive a recommendation from another jujutsu expert with a higher level. However, this recommendation cannot be given by their own teacher. For example, Gojo Satoru cannot recommend his students like Itadori Yuji, Fushiguro Megumi, or Kugisaki Nobara to advance to the next level.

This recommendation is only recognized if two or more people endorse the jujutsu expert. After receiving the recommendation, the jujutsu expert will be assigned a mission to accompany a jujutsu expert of the targeted level. However, the recommender cannot be on the same mission as the jujutsu expert. In this mission, the jujutsu expert will be evaluated to determine whether they are worthy of advancing to the next level.

Jujutsu Expert Levels

Here are the jujutsu expert levels along with examples of characters within each level:

1. Level 4:

This is the lowest level usually held by those who are newly enrolled in the Jujutsu High School (Jujutsu High), a special school established to oversee and nurture young jujutsu talents. An example character at this level is Maki Zenin, a girl who lacks cursed energy but possesses extraordinary physical abilities. Maki is actually eligible to advance to the next level, but she is hindered by her family, which is one of the famous clans in the jujutsu world. Maki has received recommendations from Aoi Todo and Mei Mei to become a Level 1 jujutsu expert.

2. Level 3:

This is an average level held by jujutsu experts, especially at Jujutsu High. Examples of characters at this level are Miwa Kasumi, a girl who uses a sword as her weapon, and Nobara Kugisaki, a jujutsu expert who uses a hammer and nails as weapons.

3. Level 2:

This is an above-average level held by strong and experienced jujutsu experts. Level 2 jujutsu experts are allowed to complete a mission alone. At Jujutsu High, if a student achieves this rank after enrollment, they will be considered a genius. Examples of characters at this level are Megumi Fushiguro, a jujutsu expert who can summon shadow creatures; Panda, a cursed panda that can change forms; and Momo Nishimiya, a girl who can fly with her broom.

4. Semi-Level 1:

This is a temporary level for those who have gone through the recommendation and mission stages to advance to Level 1 but have not yet been officially recognized as Level 1 jujutsu experts. They just have to wait for their time to advance to the next level. Examples of characters at this level are Noritoshi Kamo, a jujutsu expert who can use blood as a curse; Inumaki Toge, a jujutsu expert who can cast curses through speech; and Utahime Iori, a teacher at Jujutsu High in Kyoto who can use her voice as a curse.

5. Level 1:

This is the highest level that natural jujutsu experts can achieve through a series of aforementioned stages. Level 1 jujutsu experts are high-level individuals trusted to undergo special-level missions, lead missions, evaluate other jujutsu experts, and keep special secrets from the authorities. They also receive a very large salary. Examples of characters at this level are Kento Nanami, a jujutsu expert who can divide space into weak parts; Mei Mei, a jujutsu expert who can control crows; and Aoi Todo, a jujutsu expert who can switch places with others.

6. Special Level 1:

Special Level 1 is a special level considered lower than the truly special level. Examples of characters at this level are Naobito Zenin, Naoya Zenin, Jinichi Zenin, and Ogi Zenin.

7. Special Grade:

This is a special level granted to those who have extraordinary and immeasurable cursed energy. They do not need to go through the level advancement stages like other jujutsu experts but are immediately recognized as special-grade jujutsu experts because of their unmatched strength. They are rare and unique individuals in the jujutsu world. Examples of characters at this level are Gojo Satoru, a jujutsu expert who can control space and time; Suguru Geto, a jujutsu expert who can take and use others' curses; Tsukumo Yuki, a jujutsu expert who can create artificial curses; and Yuta Okkotsu, a jujutsu expert with the curse Rika, a very powerful ghost girl.

Status of Itadori Yuji

Now, what about the status of Itadori Yuji, the main character of the Jujutsu Kaisen series? Unfortunately, Itadori Yuji's status is still unclear. Ideally, he should be at Level 4 because he has just entered Jujutsu High and lacks experience. However, he also possesses a very strong cursed energy because he swallowed one of the four parts of Sukuna, the curse king. He has also received recommendations from Gojo Satoru, Mei Mei, and Nanami Kento to become a Level 1 jujutsu expert. However, he has not been evaluated due to various major incidents in the jujutsu world. So, for now, we can only wait for further developments in the Jujutsu Kaisen story to find out Itadori Yuji's status.

That's the article about what jujutsu is and how to advance its levels. Hopefully, this article is useful and adds to your insights into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. Thank you for reading.
