Attack on Titan, one of the most popular manga and anime worldwide, concluded with chapter 139 released on April 9, 2021. The surprising and touching ending sparked various reactions from fans. However, did you know that there are some interesting details that might have been overlooked when reading the ending? Here are some of them:

  • Armin lied to Mikasa. On the last page of chapter 139, we see Armin visiting Eren's grave with Mikasa. He says that Eren's request to be remembered for over 10 years extends to Mikasa as well. However, this is actually a lie created by Armin to comfort Mikasa. In chapter 138, we see that Eren actually wanted Mikasa to forget about him and be happy with someone else. He even asked Mikasa to take off her scarf, which is a symbol of their love. Armin knows this because he could see Eren's memories when they talked in Paths. However, he chose to lie for Mikasa's well-being.
  • Mikasa marries Jean and has a child. This is one of the most controversial and disappointing details for some fans, especially those expecting a romantic relationship between Mikasa and Eren. On page 11 of chapter 139, we see an elderly Mikasa lying next to Eren's grave. Beside her is a man resembling Jean, one of the Yeagerists who helped Mikasa and Armin in chapter 127. On page 12, we see a young boy running towards Mikasa with a dog. The boy has black hair and blue eyes, indicating that he is a descendant of Mikasa and Jean. The boy also wears the same scarf as Mikasa, meaning Mikasa never took off the scarf even though she married Jean. This suggests that Mikasa still loves Eren and cannot forget him.
  • Mikasa and Jean's child visits the giant tree. On page 13 of chapter 139, we see Mikasa and Jean's child running towards a giant tree growing near Eren's grave. The tree is strikingly similar to the tree that was the source of the first Titan power, discovered by Ymir Fritz thousands of years ago. This raises speculation that the tree might be related to the power of the Titans, and that Mikasa and Jean's child might have the potential to become a Titan. However, this is not confirmed by the author and could be just a coincidence.
  • Chapter 139 is a symbol of failure. Many fans hoped that the Attack on Titan manga would continue to chapter 140, as the number 140 is a symbol of freedom in Japan. However, the author decided to end the manga at chapter 139, which can be interpreted as a symbol of failure. This aligns with the manga's theme, showing that Eren's struggle to achieve freedom was unsuccessful. Eren couldn't erase the Titan curse, couldn't save his friends, and couldn't be with Mikasa. He could only leave a world full of conflict and sorrow.
