ANIMEKO.ORG - Solo Leveling is a highly popular manhwa with a captivating story and stunning visuals. It follows the journey of Sung Jin-Woo, a Hunter initially weak and untalented, who later gains extraordinary powers, making him the strongest Hunter in the world. In his quest to become the strongest Hunter, Sung Jin-Woo faces various enemies, including the Monarchs, creatures from the darkness that seek to destroy the human world.

But who are these Monarchs, and what is their relationship with the Rulers, beings from the light who aim to protect the world? To answer these questions, we must go back to the origin of the Solo Leveling world.

The Origins of Rulers and Monarchs

In the beginning, when there was only light and darkness, there existed a being known as the Absolute Being, or God. The Absolute Being created eight beings from light and eight beings from darkness. The light beings were called Rulers, while the darkness beings were called Monarchs. Rulers and Monarchs had opposing goals: Rulers wanted to maintain the balance of the world, while Monarchs sought to destroy it. Thus, they engaged in an endless war.

After centuries of war, seven out of eight Rulers grew tired and weary of the never-ending conflict. They pleaded with the Absolute Being to grant them the power to eradicate the Monarchs for the sake of peace. However, the Absolute Being denied their request, considering the war between Rulers and Monarchs as entertainment.

Feeling betrayed, the seven Rulers rebelled and attempted to kill the Absolute Being. Only one Ruler remained faithful to the Absolute Being, Ashborn, the strongest Ruler. Ashborn tried to quell the rebellion, but he was defeated by the other seven Rulers and left on the verge of death. Although he managed to heal himself by transforming into the Shadow Monarch, he was too late to save the Absolute Being, who had already been killed by the seven Rulers.

With the Absolute Being dead, the seven Rulers took over as the new gods. They used artifacts containing fragments of the Absolute Being's power to hunt the Monarchs. They successfully captured one Monarch, Legia, and bound him with chains that absorbed his mana, giving them an advantage in the war against the Monarchs.

Meanwhile, Ashborn, now the Shadow Monarch, harbored anger and resentment towards the seven Rulers who had killed the Absolute Being. He joined forces with the Monarchs to seek revenge. However, the Monarchs also betrayed him and attacked him together. In that assault, Ashborn managed to kill one Monarch, Baran, but he was severely injured.

As he faced death, the seven Rulers approached him, apologizing for what they had done. They expressed regret for killing the Absolute Being and sought peace with Ashborn. Confused and emotional, Ashborn couldn't respond to their plea. He chose to leave the battlefield and hide to rebuild his shadow army.

With Ashborn gone, the seven Rulers finally defeated the Monarchs and forced them to flee into the gaps between worlds. They hoped that, by doing so, the war would end, and the world would be safe.

Rulers and Monarchs in the Human World

However, their hope proved to be misplaced. The Monarchs did not surrender easily. They still harbored intentions to destroy the world, especially the human world. They planned to invade the human world and turn it into a breeding ground for their forces. To achieve this, they created Gates, openings connecting the human world to other realms. From these Gates, they sent monsters to attack humanity.

The Rulers, aware of the Monarchs' plan, tried to stop them. They also created Gates, but not to send monsters; instead, they used them to provide mana to the human world. They hoped that with mana, humans could gain the strength to resist the monsters and the Monarchs. They also sought suitable humans to become their vessels, allowing them to descend into the human world and help directly.

One such human vessel for a Ruler was Sung Il-Hwan, the father of Sung Jin-Woo. He borrowed the power of a Ruler to protect his son from Monarch attacks. However, this proved fatal for him, as he had to sacrifice his life energy to use the Ruler's power. When he used the Ruler's power against Frost Monarch and Beast Monarch, his body turned to ash and disappeared.

Sung Jin-Woo himself turned out to be a vessel, not for a Ruler but for a Monarch. He inherited the Shadow Monarch's power from Ashborn, who chose him as his successor. With the power of the Shadow Monarch, Sung Jin-Woo became an immensely powerful Hunter, capable of controlling shadows. He could also transform into the Shadow Monarch, resembling Ashborn in appearance.

With the power of the Shadow Monarch, Sung Jin-Woo had to confront other Monarchs who sought to kill him, considering him a traitor. He also had to face the Rulers who wanted to seize the Shadow Monarch's power from him. Sung Jin-Woo became entangled in a fierce battle with both Rulers and Monarchs, determining the fate of the human world.
